The name itself causes confusion, because several unrelated thymic peptides share the thymosin label. Thymosin beta-4, for example, is a different molecule with different functions. Naming conventions in the literature also mix descriptive research terms with assigned nonproprietary names, so a reader should confirm which entity a given paper addresses. Clarifying that point is usually the first step in interpreting any claim about this peptide.
Thymosin alpha-1 is a short peptide of 28 amino acid residues first described in the 1970s as a component of thymic extracts. Its N-terminal residue carries an acetyl group, and the sequence is highly conserved across mammalian species. The peptide is not encoded as a standalone gene product; it is released by proteolytic cleavage from the N-terminus of prothymosin alpha, a larger acidic nuclear protein. That precursor relationship places it within a broader family of thymic and immune-associated peptides that have been studied for decades.
The activity of this peptide is generally described as immunomodulatory rather than directly antimicrobial. Experimental work links it to signaling through certain Toll-like receptors on dendritic cells and to downstream maturation of antigen-presenting cells. Reported effects include expansion of T cell subsets, shifts in cytokine profiles, and increased natural killer cell activity. These observations come largely from cell culture and animal models, and the precise receptor-level events in humans remain incompletely characterized.
The peptide was described in the 1970s as a component of thymic extracts, and early research focused on restoring immune function in immunodeficiency states. A synthetic version entered clinical development in the 1980s and is approved as a drug in several countries for conditions such as chronic hepatitis B and certain immunodeficiencies. Approval status varies widely by jurisdiction, and in the United States it is not an approved therapeutic. Regulatory and clinical positions differ, so statements about efficacy should be tied to specific indications and studies.
Thymosin alpha-1 is a synthetic peptide of 28 amino acids, corresponding to the N-terminal fragment of prothymosin alpha. Its sequence begins with acetylation at the N-terminus, a modification that affects stability and receptor interaction. The peptide is acidic, with a calculated isoelectric point near 4.2, and carries no disulfide bonds, so its secondary structure is largely flexible in solution. Molecular mass is approximately 3108 daltons. The native form was first isolated from bovine thymus tissue, while pharmaceutical material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis.

Identity and purity are usually assessed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the target peptide from truncated or chemically modified byproducts. Mass spectrometry confirms the expected molecular mass and can indicate acetylation state or sequence errors. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping supply complementary sequence-level information, while endotoxin testing is relevant for preparations intended for cell or animal work. Purity figures reported by suppliers refer to the method used and are not directly comparable across laboratories unless conditions are stated.
Lyophilized material is typically treated as a hygroscopic solid that should be brought to room temperature before the container is opened, which limits condensation on the powder. Reconstitution is commonly done with sterile water or a buffered diluent, and gentle mixing is preferred over vigorous agitation to reduce foaming and surface adsorption. Because peptides can bind to plastic and glass, diluents containing a small amount of carrier protein are sometimes used in laboratory work. Working solutions are generally aliquoted and prepared fresh rather than subjected to repeated freezing and thawing.
Stability depends on temperature, pH, and the number of freeze-thaw events the sample has experienced. Freeze-dried material is commonly held at -20 °C or colder, while reconstituted liquid is kept cold and used within a short window. Extreme pH and prolonged light exposure can promote deamidation, oxidation, or aggregation, particularly at asparagine and methionine positions. Adsorption to container walls can lower the measured concentration of a dilute solution even when the peptide molecules themselves remain intact.
=== Society === Little is revealed of the Combine's activities outside of Earth, but dialogue in Half-Life 2 states that they control worlds of various dimensions inhabited by a range of species. The Combine occupation of Earth is shown to be a brutal totalitarian police state. In City 17, an Eastern European city, Civil Protection units routinely conduct searches of apartment blocks, interrogating human citizens, and engaging in wanton police brutality. The military Overwatch forces of the Combine attack human resistance bases in an effort to further solidify their authority in the urban centers. Human citizens are clad in blue uniforms, living in designated apartment blocks and move around to different cities or locales in passenger trains by the Combine's will. Vortigaunts, enemy alien creatures from Half-Life, have also been enslaved, and are observed in various professions such as janitors. According to Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar, the Combine are draining Earth's oceans and resources to be used on other Combine worlds. The heart of the Combine's command over Earth in Half-Life 2 is the Citadel, a large tower constructed by them which reaches both tens of thousands of feet (several or several tens of kilometres) into the sky and deep underground. Located within City 17, the Citadel serves as the Combine's headquarters on Earth, housing Combine Advisors and the office of Earth's administrator, Dr. Wallace Breen. Breen, a puppet ruler, is frequently seen on large screens around the city on which he spreads propaganda and makes announcements.
Valproate exists in two main molecular variants: sodium valproate and valproic acid without sodium (often implied by simply valproate). A mixture between these two is termed semisodium valproate. It is unclear whether there is any difference in efficacy between these variants, except from the fact that about 10% more mass of sodium valproate is needed than valproic acid without sodium to compensate for the sodium itself. In Europe, the US, and many other countries three variants of valproate are sold: valproic acid, sodium valproate and valproate semisodium also known as divalproex sodium, the latter is believed to have fewer gastrointestinal side-effects. Divalproex sodium tablets are a formulation comprising valproate sodium and valproic acid in a 1:1 molar relationship. Magnesium valproate is also available in China.
On June 7, after winning the election, Ford said that the "very first item" on his agenda would be to cancel the federal carbon tax and provincial cap-and-trade programs in order to prevent motorists from being "gouged at the pumps". According to a June 28, 2018 article in The Economist, Ontario, with "Canada's second-highest public debt per person and a growing budget deficit", Ford's "poleaxing of cap and trade" would result in C$2.8bn worth of pollution permits owned by companies that could result in lawsuits. The article said that Ontario would lose C$2bn a year from the sale of pollution permits under its cap-and-trade program, which represents 1.3% of Ontario's revenue. In November 2018, the Ford government announced that it was eliminating three provincial watchdog groups, including the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO), to cut costs. Then Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO), Dianne Saxe, had just submitted her 4-volume, 339-page 2018 Environmental Protection Report, entitled "Back to Basics, to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Saxe was a "vocal critic" of the Ford government's "actions on climate change"—"their vow to fight a federal carbon tax, pulling out of more than 700 renewable energy contracts and moving to end the Ontario Green Energy Act." Bill 57, also known as the Restoring Trust, Transparency and Accountability Act transferred the Environmental Commissioner Officer's duties to the Auditor General of Ontario.
== History == The Celloscope was developed for the Swedish company AB Lars Ljungberg & Co under the direction of engineer Erik Öhlin at Linson Instrument AB. In an interview published in the Clinical Biochemistry in the Nordics, a membership magazine for the Nordic Association for Clinical Chemistry, Lars Ljungberg explains that he and his coworkers had been considering different solutions for counting blood cells for some time when they came across a method presented by the American Navy on how particles could be counted when allowed to pass a capillary hole through which a weak direct current was passed simultaneously. The Celloscope method exploits the feature of blood cells not being conductive and therefore make interruptions (pulses) to the current, which then can be counted. What Ljungberg and coworkers did not know was that Wallace H. Coulter in Chicago had applied for and received a patent on the particle count principle in 1953. When presented at a German tradeshow in September 1957, the Celloscope counter was examined by Dr. George Brecher, the first author of one of the NIH evaluations of the Coulter counter. In a letter to Coulter, Brecher reported about what he thought was a close functional copy of the Coulter counter, yet with simpler electronics and an integrated sample stand, creating a both smaller and less costly instrument for use in clinical applications. When the Celloscope was introduced to the market in the early 60s, a lawsuit was filed by Coulter Electronics Inc. against AB Lars Ljungberg & Co for alleged infringement of the American patent.
Diphenoxylate (Lomotil, R-1132) is a centrally active opioid drug of the phenylpiperidine series that is used as a combination drug, prescribed in the United States under the trade name Lomotil, with atropine for the treatment of diarrhea. Diphenoxylate is an opioid and acts by slowing intestinal contractions; the atropine is present to prevent drug abuse and overdose. It should not be given to children due to the risk that they will stop breathing and should not be used in people with Clostridioides difficile infection.

=== Self-assembly === Self-assembly methods have been shown to be promising methods for tissue engineering. Self-assembly methods have the advantage of allowing tissues to develop their own extracellular matrix, resulting in tissue that better recapitulates biochemical and biomechanical properties of native tissue. Self-assembling engineered articular cartilage was introduced by Jerry Hu and Kyriacos A. Athanasiou in 2006 and applications of the process have resulted in engineered cartilage approaching the strength of native tissue. Self-assembly is a prime technology to get cells grown in a lab to assemble into three-dimensional shapes. To break down tissues into cells, researchers first have to dissolve the extracellular matrix that normally binds them together. Once cells are isolated, they must form the complex structures that make up our natural tissues.

Major medical organizations hold varying positions on the prophylactic efficacy of the elective circumcision of minors in developed countries. Literature on the matter is polarized, with the cost-benefit analysis highly dependent on the kinds and frequencies of health problems in the population under discussion and how circumcision affects them. The World Health Organization (WHO), UNAIDS, and American medical organizations take the position that its prophylactic health benefits outweigh the risks, while European, Australian, and New Zealand medical organizations generally hold that its medical benefits are insufficient to justify it. Advocates of circumcision recommend performing it during the neonatal period when it is less expensive and has a lower risk of complications. The American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said that circumcision's potential benefits outweigh the risks. In 2010, the World Health Organization said:

It is usually classified as an immunomodulatory peptide rather than a classical hormone. It derives from the larger protein prothymosin alpha and acts mainly on immune cells. The thymosin label covers a group of distinct peptides, so the naming can be misleading.
The two share a family name but have different sequences, sizes, and functions. Thymosin beta-4 is a 43-residue peptide associated with actin binding and cell migration. Thymosin alpha-1 is a 28-residue peptide linked mainly to immune signaling.
Thymalfasin is the assigned international nonproprietary name for the synthetic 28-residue peptide. Thymosin alpha-1 is the descriptive research name for the same molecule. Which term appears depends on the context and the regulatory document.
It corresponds to a fragment of the larger protein prothymosin alpha, which is present in many tissues. The isolated 28-amino-acid peptide was originally obtained from thymus preparations, and the pharmaceutical product is synthesized rather than extracted. The term therefore describes both a natural fragment and a manufactured drug substance.
